I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. (Gal. 2:20)

From the first moment of his conversion, St Paul had understood that salvation can only come from Christ, the Son of God made man, who was crucified. From that moment he had decided to belong totally to Christ and that meant sharing Christ's lot. But, by doing this, he became so Christ-like that he could say, "It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me."

I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me.

Through his own experience St Paul shows us the identity of a Christian. Who is a Christian? A Christian is someone who has said 'yes' to Jesus, and who is called to follow him along the way of the cross: the cross of self-denial, hence of love for others, of real service of our brothers and sisters, of forgiveness, of mutual love..., and also the cross of the lack of understanding that is bound to come from the world.

I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer l who live, but Christ who lives in me.

The more Christians strive to walk along the way of the cross, however, the more Jesus takes possession of them. Every time Christians try to say 'yes' to Jesus, this is translated into a new grace, which gradually transforms them, making them more and more like Jesus. This can be seen in the saints, who are fulfilled Christians.

I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer l who live, but Christ who lives in me.

How can we live the Word of Life this month? By striving to say 'yes' to Jesus, by being willing to be crucified like him. We must face difficult moments with decision and strength. We must face the trials of life and even temptations; and we must overcome them, if possible with joy. We must always be courageous enough to go beyond our self and beyond the world's mentality which is so different from Jesus; we must have the courage to go against the current.

If we do this, Jesus will live in us always more, always more take possession of our minds and hearts. Always more we will become his instruments, builders of peace, of brotherhood, of true love. For it will no longer be we who act in us, but always more it will be Jesus who lives in us.
