Before the world was made, he chose us, chose us in Christ, to be holy and spotless, and to live through love in his presence. (Eph. 1:4)

This month's Word of Life is taken from the very beautiful hymn to the love of God which is at the beginning of Paul's letter to the Ephesians. This verse conveys the central theme of the hymn, which is that our origins lie in the love of God. At the very beginning of human history, and at the beginning of our own lives, lies an act of God's infinite love. For each one of us our heavenly father has traced out, from all eternity, a plan for our happiness, fulfilment and joy which goes beyond anything we could dream of.

Before the world was made, he chose us, chose us in Christ, to be holy and spotless, and to live through love in his presence.

What makes Paul so certain that God loves us immensely? It is the fact that God gave us his Son, Jesus Christ, and that Jesus came amongst us. He came to teach us his word, to give himself to us, spending his whole life for us, to the point of sacrificing himself on the cross. He came to give us his divine life, his light and his capacity to love. In short, he came to make us all his brothers and sisters who, together with him, are children of the one Father.

Before the world was made, he chose us, chose us in Christ, to be holy and spotless, and to live through love in his presence.

In fact, when we put into practice the words of Jesus, we experience at first hand that there is nothing truer and greater than Christ Jesus. This is where Paul is leading us. Christ Jesus is the fullness of light and joy. He is the one who gives meaning to the whole of our lives. He is true freedom, true peace and true love, and there is no more wonderful adventure than for us to become capable of loving as he did.

Before the world was made, he chose us, chose us in Christ, to be holy and spotless, and to live through love in his presence.

How can we live the Word of Life this month? It asks us always to remember our origins and the wonderful plan that God has for each one of us. But above all, it aims at making the certainty that God loves us immensely something that we experience personally. This will happen in so far as we try to live our lives according to the marvellous blueprint Jesus left us. This means putting his words into practice, above all his commandment of love of neighbour, with all its shades of meaning, not letting ourselves be put off by the coldness or scepticism that surrounds us.

Clearly, by living in this way, his divine life will grow within us. We will become more like Christ and able to love as he did. In short, we will experience fulfilment even now, in accordance with the plan God has had for us from all eternity.
